International Meeting for Peace and for a Political Solution to the Colombian Conflict

Dear Friends

War and human rights violations continue in Colombia. Political assassinations, people being disappeared, driven off the land and the social, economic, cultural and ethical costs of war form a catastrophic legacy for new generations in this Latin American country.

According to ACNUR, with approximately 5 million people effected, Colombia  occupies first place  in the world for internally displaced people. But  the tragedy does not end there.  For example, to expose the supposed demobilisation of the paramilitaries, of the silence and/or denial of the conflict and of the current reinterpretations of Colombian reality, the journalist Alfredo Molano makes a terrible observation that were all the 135, 000 people assassinated by paramilitaries between June 2006 and December 2010 (the period of the "Justice and Peace" process) to form a line it would stretch for 173 kilometres, that is; the distance from Bogotá to Tunja, or from Cali to Popayán, or much further than the distance between Berne and Geneva.

The members of the organizing committee agree, and thousands of people and social and political organisations in Colombia and overseas, do not believe that the Colombian conflict will resolved by war. We consider it necessary to continue exploring ways leading towards a political way out of the conflict, in which the rights of the Colombian people to have a dignified life in peace and democracy are recognised.  We are besides convinced that  peace is for all, and it is essential that the entire society participates to generate alternatives in the search for peace. It is with this proposal that we seek to organise in Switxerland an " International Meeting for Peace and for a Political Solution to the Colombian Conflict” with the objective to reflect on the seach for peace with social justice in Colombia.

The objectives of the meeting are as follows:

  • to help make the Colombian reality visible internationally and promote solidarity concerning the search for a political solution to the conflict
  • to establish the grounds to generate a process that would allow creating scenarios for a political solution, contributing efforst in this direction.
  • Peace with social justice for the Colombian people is a task for all, we invite you to  construct peace scenarios from a unitarian perspective.

To reach to a just and lasting peace: political solution to the conflict straightaway!

In Colombia serious form of war, impunity and violations to the human rights keep growing.

Assassinations in Colombia for political reasons, exiled persons and costs of war in social, economical, cultural and ethical form set a catastrophe that will be inherited by new generations of this Latin American nation in one fail to act decisively to find a political solution to the conflict.

Those who signed this letter, we consider that Colombian conflict can not be resolved with more war. We believe it is necessary to pave the way leading to the recognition of the Colombian people rights to a decent life, in peace and democracy. Therefore we demand that the Colombian government and armed insurgency for a demonstration of real peace will configure the ideal setting to further talks immediately.

Peace is a matter for all and that concerns not only the guerrillas and the state. The participation of Colombian society as a whole is a prerequisite to build a lasting peace.

We support people from different sectors, from different parts of the world who are coming mobilized for a political solution to the conflict because it is the active participation of society that help to build alternatives that stimulate the achievement of peace and the full exercise of the human rights.
